Pentagon leak traced to video game chat group users arguing over war in Ukraine
Investigation recommends highly classified reports were first shared on shut gamer discussion boards facilitated by Conflict
A harming group of records spilled from the Pentagon seems to have been at first shared on the computer game talk stage Friction with an end goal to win a contention about the conflict in Ukraine, as per open-source knowledge examiners.

"After a short disagreement with someone else on the server about Minecraft Guides and the conflict in Ukraine, one of the Strife clients answered: 'Here, have some released reports' - joining 10 records about Ukraine, some of which bore the 'top secret' markings," said Aric Toler, an examiner at the analytical examination group§ Bellingcat.
The game, which has a reputation for accuracy, has 70 million players worldwide, leading to regular disputes about balance and accuracy – as a result, users have made breaches in at least 10 separate cases since 2020, frequently through posting classified documents about the capability of active weaponry in an effort to argue for the digital version of the vehicle to be improved.
In October 2021, for instance, classified design details about the French Leclerc tank were posted to win an argument about turret rotation speed. In July 2021, a user claiming to be a tank commander in the British army posted documents about the armour structure of the vehicle to win an argument. In January this year, design documents covering at least five separate fighter jets were posted by four different users.
The game has become such a shorthand for intelligence failures that the military contractor Raytheon was forced to deny reports that it specifically asked about War Thunder as part of a security clearance process.

That client had, thusly, tracked down them on one more Conflict server, run by and for enthusiasts of the Filipino YouTuber WowMao, where 30 archives had been posted three days sooner, with "handfuls" of other unconfirmed records about Ukraine. Nonetheless, even that didn't give off an impression of being the first source: a third Disagreement server, named "Hooligan Shaker Focal", among different titles, may have been where the reports were initially posted as soon as mid-January.
"Posts and channel postings show that the server's clients were keen on computer games, music, Customary Christianity, and being a fan for the well known YouTuber 'Oxide'," Toler said, referring to the military-themed YouTube channel. "This server was not particularly international in nature, in spite of the fact that its clients had a firmly safe position on a few issues, individuals told Bellingcat. Racial slurs and bigoted images were shared generally."
Albeit the scale and responsiveness of the breaks are critical, this isn't whenever that a knowledge first break has been followed back to a contention about computer games. One game specifically, the vehicular battle recreation War Thunder, has become infamous for the sheer amount of releases connected to it.
